Molten lava steams on the flanks of Pacaya
No matter when you come to Antigua, you won’t be able to miss the Pacaya-tour companies and their leaflet distributors in the Plaza Mayor. But climbing the volcano is no mean feat – it is 2560 metres high, and reaching the summit takes two to three hours of seemingly one-step-forward and two-steps-back, edging up frustratingly loose, black lava, scree fields. There are two routes up Pacaya and organized groups stick to the easier option, leaving from San Francisco de Sales. Many tour departures are timed so that you arrive at the cone of the volcano in plenty of time for sunset and the full impact of the contrast between the – hopefully – erupting red lava and the darkening sky.
As the hike begins, you hear the slightly ominous, dull thunder-like sounds of eruptions high above. And, just in case you need any more warning that this is not a tour to take lightly, steaming, hot remnants from recent eruptions begin to line the path as you near the active summit: the McKenney Cone. Underfoot, things start to get heated, too, and thick-soled walking boots come into their own. Just as it seems as though you are going to walk over the rim of the cone, the trail turns to the left and up to the relative safety of the old, dormant summit.
Climbing Pacaya in the afternoon is best to see it erupt
